Despite the struggling of many in the U.S. who mistakenly believed the party would never end, the party seems to be continuing for most. The roads are still jammed with cars, snowmobiles still plague the snow-covered woods, and vacation mansions still clutter the coastline. Big Finance still owns Washington, which still thinks it can run the world.

If the party is over, the nation has a couple choices: it can downsize responsibly, sharing the pain, with everyone adjusting together. Alternatively, as resources decline, slice after slice of society can simply be trimmed off and discarded. Compare how the millions of discouraged ex-workers are ignored with the coddling of Goldman Sachs and AIG and BoA.

A little downsizing could make the U.S. a far better country, reminding us of the modesty of aspirations, patience, willingness to work and save of our ancestors. It might even trim a bit of the Texas swagger out of our "might makes right" foreign policy.

Unfortunately, I don't think the lesson of gluttony has been learned yet. Unfortunately, the party is not over. It is just that some of us are no longer invited.
